The most beautiful regions for bike rides
Bike rides give you freedom
Riding a bike allows you to cover greater distances in less time than you could ever achieve on foot, plus you generally need very little in the way of equipment or experience. In many parts of the world, the increasing popularity of the bike is leading to the development of better cycling networks, which increasingly allow the rider to avoid mingling with vehicular traffic.
The number of routes you can choose from is also growing - as is the variety of experiences they offer. Cycling is no longer simply a matter of getting from A to B - you can also use your bike to explore hills, lakes, coastlines, and, of course, towns and cities.
We have put together some of the top cycling tours in Europe: From short to long, from easy to difficult and from flat to hilly - there's something for everyone.
Bike rides are also the perfect option for family outings and great fun for kids. In fact, ever more cycling routes are being created with families specifically in mind. They often lead to interesting/fun destinations and offer places to stop for drinks and snacks along the way.
The surge in popularity of the e-bike shows no sign of abating, as the motor helps you conserve energy and tackle slopes that otherwise wouldn't be doable. In response to this growth, charging points for batteries seem set to increase in number too.
Preparation for your bike ride
Outdooractive gives you two choices when it comes to planning your trip: you can either find an existing route using the Route Finder or plan your own in the Route Planner.
We recommend making use of existing routes if you're new to cycling or are in a region you're not familiar with. You can also use the search filter to narrow down the results further to better suit your personal requirements and tastes. The Travel Guide lets you search routes all over the world. Simply select your activity and enter the destination of your choice in the search bar.
When planning your own route, it's important to pay particular attention to the type of cycling you are doing. For example, road bikes should only be used on asphalt, so be mindful of this when setting the activity to ensure that the correct route network displays.
