Nature Trails
Apart from their general easiness, the most distinguishing feature of a 'Nature Trail' is its educational and informational value, as signified by the use of boards and other - often interactive- displays. A nature trail may not be limited to solely focusing on the natural surroundings - it could also include historical, cultural, or even culinary insights.

Hiking and learning
surprising variety
It might surprise you to know that a lot of 'nature' trails are more than just learning about the local flora and fauna. They may, for example, focus on topics as diverse as wine manufacturing, sculptures, barefooting walking - you name it. Yet they all have one thing in common, and that is that they combine being outdoors in the fresh air with learning something.
Nature trails are also a great option for the family, as in many cases, they have usually been created with kids in mind. Water play, puzzles, interactive displays, and some sort of associated 'mascot' all combine to make nature trails a great learning opportunity for everyone.
A voyage of discovery
Nature trails in other parts of the world
The first known official nature trail opened around 1925 at Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey, USA, and shortly after, various other trails began to appear in other countries around the world. In 1930, for example, Germany's first nature trail opened near Berlin. Things really started to get going globally in the 1950s, when the increasing popularity and availability of cars began drawing more people to the countryside for recreation.
Nature trails can now be found all over the world. For example, you can head to Mount Rushmore in the USA and learn about America's founding fathers on the Presidential Trail, or hike the Soča Trail in Slovenia.
Our Route Finder lets you search and filter nature trails - no matter where you might be.
