Hiking in the fells
The Fjäll is probably one of the most popular areas in Sweden for outdoor sports. The term refers to a rocky plateau that lies above the coniferous forest line. In northern Scandinavia, this is between 500 m and 900 m – and yet here we find vegetation of low trees, heather and lichens that we only find in the Alps, for example, at an altitude of 1500 m.
The Swedish Hiking Association STF (Svenska Turistföreningen) takes care of the maintenance of the Kungsleden and other hiking trails in Nodschweden. The STF also manages cabins and the popular fjällstationer (mountain stations), which offer simple ¨overnight accommodation in the wilderness.
