They are proud watchmen towering above the valleys carved deep into the Rhenish Massif by the Rhine, Moselle, Ahr, Lahn and Nahe rivers and their tributaries. They stand steadfastly in the mystic forests of the Eifel, Hunsrück and Palatinate, or gaze proudly over the vastness of the Eifel, Rhine-Hesse and the Westerwald. Along with the unspoilt nature, they form an impressive backdrop to our 13 premium long-distance hiking trails, offering excellent quality walks along selected routes. There is nowhere else in Rhineland‑Palatinate where the castles line up together like a string of pearls as they do on the Rheinsteig Trail and the Rhine Castle Trail in the romantic Rhine valley. But there are various trails, including the Ahrsteig, Saar-Hunsrück Trail, Lahn Trail, Moselle Trail, Soonwald Trail, Palatinate High Forest Trail, Palatinate Wine Trial and Westerwald Trail, where you can discover and conquer the stone remains of cultural history over the course of a half-day or whole-day walk.
