For cyclists, there are well-developed cycle paths along the spit that allow you to explore the region on two wheels. These routes lead through picturesque villages, past historical sights and offer a relaxed way to experience the unique atmosphere of the area. As cycling is a popular sport in Lithuania, you can hire bikes everywhere, which is ideal for short excursions on holiday.
The coast of the Curonian Spit also offers ideal conditions for water sports activities. Windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing are popular activities that can be practised by visitors in the waters of the Curonian Lagoon. Even beginners can try their hand at riding four-legged friends and enjoy the uniquely beautiful landscape!
Rome of the North - Lithuania's capital Vilnius
The country's capital was named European Capital of Culture in 2009, but the city has been the centre of the region for centuries. Vilnius is the largest and oldest city in Lithuania and its heritage can be seen in the cityscape. Buildings from the Western and Southern European Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods typical of the country's historic centre tell the story of its rich history. The medieval alleyways have therefore been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994!
Vilnius is known as the "Rome of the North" because one church follows the next. The baroque towers dominate the cityscape and give it a touch of an Italian metropolis. Vilnius Cathedral was built in the 13th century, is the oldest church in the country and is definitely worth a visit!
