Impressive biodiversity near the equator
Colombia is located in the north of South America, nestled between the Pacific, the Caribbean, the Amazon and the Andes in the west of the country. Due to its location close to the equator, it has tropical temperatures all year round and therefore ideal conditions for numerous exotic animal and plant species. No wonder Colombia is one of the most diverse countries in the world in terms of flora and fauna. 10 per cent of the world's species are found here. The Latin American country on the equator has a total of five biosphere reserves.
Bogotá: World metropolis between modernity and colonial times
The capital and largest city of Colombia is Bogotá. Bogotá is considered the economic and cultural centre. If you stroll through the streets of the metropolis, you will immediately notice the contrast between modern and old buildings. Time and again you come across buildings, churches and monasteries from the colonial era that are well worth seeing, including the cathedral, the Capitolio Nacional or the Alcaldía de Bogotá on Plaza Bolívar. Also worth seeing are the seat of government, the Gold Museum, the numerous green parks and the colourful markets. At the Paloquemao market, you can discover all kinds of exotic fruit and vegetables.
City lovers should also make time for a visit to the cities of Cali, Mendellín, Manizales, Barranquilla, Mompós and Cartagena de Inias. The latter is a harbour city on the Caribbean Sea and is particularly interesting for culture lovers.
Hiking in El Cocuy National Park: gigantic panorama amid 5000 metre peaks
Nature lovers and mountaineers can expect a real hiking paradise in the national park with impressive views and a glacier touch. An impressive tour first leads through the beautiful high valley of Valle de Lagunillas, before the two distant 5000 metre peaks of Púlpito de Diablo and Pan de Azúcar can be seen as the altitude increases. The Pan de Azúcar is covered in snow and ice all year round, while the Púlpito del Diablo rises majestically into the sky as a gigantic rock of red sandstone.
