Between the coast and the high mountains
Bulgaria is located in the east of the Balkan Peninsula. While Serbia and Macedonia lie to the west, the country is bordered by the Black Sea coast to the east. A large part of the country is made up of the Danube and Maritsa plains and their tributaries. However, the landscape profile is also characterised by several high mountain ranges: The Rhodope mountain range rises in the south, while the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains crosses Bulgaria from east to west. In the Rila Mountains in the south-west of the country lies Musala (2925 m), the highest peak in the entire Balkan Peninsula. The neighbouring Pirin Mountains are just as alpine.
Outdoor activities in Bulgaria
The Balkan Mountains, with their valleys, attract mountain bikers and climbers in particular. The largely forested Rhodope Mountains are particularly suitable for hikers. However, the mountain regions not only offer activities during the summer, but also excellent winter sports conditions. Bulgaria is home to numerous national parks, most of which are accessible to visitors. The many caves, some of which can be visited, are also a special feature of the landscape. The Saeva Dupka stalactite cave, for example, is impressive.
Prominent witnesses of the past
Bulgaria has a history dating back thousands of years. Remains of the Thracians are still regularly discovered - important witnesses from antiquity. Monasteries also play an important role in Bulgaria's cultural heritage. The most famous monastery is probably the Rila Monastery: the 10th century complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits at an altitude of around 1147 metres. Bulgarian history in the smallest of spaces can be experienced in the harbour town of Nessebar, which is only connected to the mainland by a causeway.
