The Allgäu mountain landscape is characterized by a rich geology. There are mountains of rocky main dolomite such as the high peaks of the Allgäu main ridge as well as fragile sedimentary rock like marlstone or flysch that the typical Allgäu grass mountains such as the Höfats consists of. For mountaineers, these differing rock formations are particularly interesting as each route turns out to be different.

Reaching limits
The highest peaks in the Oberallgäu are Hochfrottspitze and Mädelegabel with 2648 and 2644 m. However, if you are looking for a mountaineering challenge, you should not only pay attention to the altitude gains. The most technically demanding routes are often found on mountains like the Höfats, whose steep slopes crisscrossed with scree and covered with grass often push even experienced mountaineers to their limits.
Routes for beginners and families
But mountaineering beginners and families will also find a wide range of routes in the Oberallgäu. Many cable cars are operating even in the summer months and save mountaineers long and tedious ascents. A nice example is the hike from the Nebelhorn cable car to the Laufbacher Eck.
Those who prefer to start hiking in the valley will find everything a climber's heart desires on the climb to the Rubihorn: a wild mountain stream, cozy huts, the picturesque Gaisalpsee and the impressive panoramic view from the Rubihorn summit.
Solid stamina and a certain degree of surefootedness and a head for heights are basic prerequisites for all mountaineering activities.
