Tyrol is one of the best road cycling regions in the Alps. This has not only been known since the spectacular Cycling World Championships 2018 in Innsbruck. Destinations include the racing bike region around Kufstein, the provincial capital Innsbruck, but also East Tyrol and the Ötztal. Here we present the best racing bike regions in Tyrol in more detail:
The 10 most beautiful road cycling routes in Tyrol
Road bike tours between Kufstein and the Alpbach Valley
In the eastern part of Tyrol, Kufstein has fully embraced the theme of road cycling and in the recent past has done a lot to attract road cycling fans. Numerous racing bike routes and events such as the Kufsteiner Radmarathon have further strengthened Kufstein's reputation as a racing bike stronghold. Due to its central location in the Inn Valley, you have many options for tours: either you head east, where wonderful roads in the Kitzbühl Alps and around the Wilder Kaiser await you. Or you follow the routes through the Inn Valley away from the main traffic routes and into the Brandenberg Alps.
The Alpbach Valley, which is only about 30 km from Kufstein, is also dedicated to road cycling. The idyllic high valley offers quick access to many of the region's classic routes and is also simply a beautiful spot where you can relax after a tour.
The Alpbach Valley is also a great place for road cycling.
Road bike tours in the Ötztal, metres of altitude galore!
The Ötztal is not only home to the most famous road cycling event in the Alps, the Ötztaler Radmarathon, but is also known and loved in the scene as an excellent training area. If you want to complete a training camp with many metres of altitude, you won't find a better place in Austria. Two legendary climbs await you here, the Timmelsjoch and the Ötztaler Gletscherstraße, which are also popular with those who are in great shape. The perfect infrastructure in the valley around Sölden contributes to the fact that professionals also like to come here to train.
Road bike tours in the mountains of East Tyrol
In East Tyrol you will be spoilt with cross-border routes in a spectacularly beautiful landscape. A great classic is the route of the Dolomites Tour, which takes place every year in June. The route circles the Lienz Dolomites and includes a detour to Carinthia. Nearby Friuli can also be explored on long rides – legendary climbs like Monte Zoncolan await here. Lienz is hard to beat as a base for a holiday with a racing bike. The great laps to the Staller Sattel also start from here and in the evening you can enjoy the flair of the small Alpine town.
Central in Tyrol: Innsbruck and Hall-Wattens
The combination of sport and city inspires, and Innsbruck is unrivalled in this respect. It has long been no secret that the area around Innsbruck is also a great place for road cycling, but the 2018 Road Cycling World Championships have confirmed this once again. If you prefer something less urban, you can stay in neighbouring Hall-Wattens, which is also a great starting point for racing bike tours. The central location makes it possible to go on racing bike tours to almost all parts of Tyrol and also offers numerous other activities besides racing cycling.
Racing bike paradise Tannheimer Tal
The location at the transition from the foothills of the Alps to the high mountains makes the Tannheimer Tal a racing bike region where climbing specialists and fans of long, hilly stages feel at home. From the Tannheimer Tal, the neighbouring Allgäu can be explored in the best possible way, even laps as far as Lake Constance or the Arlberg are possible. Everyone will find a tour to suit them in terms of duration and length. The valley itself scores with scenic beauty and cosiness and is therefore the ideal base for a training stay or an active holiday in summer.
The Tannheimer Tal has developed into a top destination for racing cyclists. From the Tyrolean high valley, many ...
