So schmecken die Berge (“The Taste of the Mountains“)
Led by the German Alpine Club, “The Taste of the Mountains“ intiative is currently represented by 92 mountain huts. Started in 1999, this campaign seeks to promote closer cooperation and partnership between mountain hut owners, local farmers and regional food producers. The Austrian Alpine Club and the South Tyrol Alpine Club also joined in 2008, bringing together a combined total of around 550 huts across the Alpine region. Participating mountain huts can be recognized by their use of the distinctive cow motif and by the menu, in which relevant offers are clearly marked.

Criteria for hut owners
The Alpine Clubs aim to ensure that a practicable proportion of regionally produced food is available. Participating hut owners commit themselves to offering at the least the following as part of their menus:
- A meat dish (cured pork products, beef from regional cattle, etc.)
- Vegetarian options (fruit cakes, butter, mountain breads, etc.)
- One non-alcoholic and one alcoholic beverage (buttermilk, juices, schnapps and liqueurs, etc.)
